800 Startups in Los Angeles, 160 in San Diego and 100 in Orange County are looking for talent & help
I have used Anglist to hire for a number of our start-ups in the past and found it to be an easy and great place to find talent, but here are a few notes before you venture out to find the perfect startup you would want to work with:
- It is free to post a job on Angelist, so startups may quickly create a job posting when they think of it and forget that they had done so and not respond for months, while you’re holding your breath.
- The whole connection process on Angelist is a bit clumsy, so even when you “connect/match” you don’t necessary have each other’s email and have to go through the hassle of connecting via the platform’s messaging app for weeks before you connect via email or phone.
- Some startups note a salary or equity option, but this “salary” could be post their raise, which they may want you to help raise. In other words, these so-called ‘salaried’ positions are not necessarily paying positions. Always check with the founders if the numbers they have noted are something they can pay upon hire or depends on the fundraising cycle, which they’ll be closing in 6 months or less ;)
- Always double-check a start-up’s financial situation on Crunchbase before applying. If you see a position offering a $80,000 salary and they’ve only raised $20,000 in the past two years, then you may want to ask if you can barrow their Aladdin's magic lamp for a few days ;)
All that said, if you are really interested in a start-up, the best approach is to write a detailed email explaining your interest and send it directly to the founder(s).
And last but not least, here’s The List of 1000 SoCal Dreamers that need your talent, time and energy!
